2024 Toyota bZ4X Limited AWD Review: Going Full EV

Toyota has gone full EV with the bZ4X. The model I received for press loaner was the 2024 Limited AWD. It was painted in the Supersonic Red with a black roof, and the red color has been a recent favorite of mine from Toyota. I did have a constant battle of whether I liked the black front fender parts. I think if the front fenders matched the lines of the rear fender, I would’ve definitely liked them. In typical EV fashion, the front has a flat design which seems to be a constant bug magnet. One of my favorite designs was the optional split roof rear spoiler. It was a different design than the typical spoiler and gave a rally style vibe to it.

Although the interior was fully black, there were different shades and textures to give it some life. I’m usually not a fan of piano black pieces, but the bZ4X did the trim in the right way. The steering wheel set up is the same as the Prius which I had a love/hate relationship with. I don’t like the angle it has because it obstructs the gauge cluster when placed at the high setting. My favorite component of the interior has to be the wireless charger. It had a cool transparent design where your phone’s screen lit up through it. I was confused at the lack of a glovebox but apparently it appears to be a common thing among some EVs. Having a small compartment is all that is needed for the minimum items like proof of insurance and vehicle registration papers.

Under the hood, the dual motors provide 80kW each offering a total 214 horsepower and 248 lb.-ft. of torque. Don’t expect neck-breaking acceleration since it does have to move all 4,464 lbs that the AWD model weighs. It isn’t a deterrent though, as the everyday drivability was perfect to not worry about exceeding speed limits. We were unable to put the X modes to use since we only had sunny weather and no inclement weather to test it out with.

Overall, the 2024 Toyota bZ4X was a pretty decent first attempt for Toyota’s first mass production full EV. If you meet the target audience for this EV, I think you’ll be very happy with it.
