2025 Chevrolet Equinox EV Review: Starter EV

The 2025 Chevrolet Equinox EV is the current entry level EV for the bowtie brand. It has a big set of wheels to fill after it replaced the beloved Bolt EV and EUV. The Bolt was a small and fun package that I was not expecting in an entry level EV. When the Equinox replaced the Bolt, I was getting all the comments saying how they will miss it.
Starting with the outside, the Equinox EV looks like a sleeker version of its ICE counterpart. One of things I’m glad Chevy did, was design an EV frontend that isn’t simply flat and grille-less. The eyebrow lighting had an animation that was part of their $11,000 convenience package II. The grille had a carbon fiber weave design that I wasn’t completely sure if it was true carbon, but was nice design texture.
The side profile of the Equinox EV has an almost Porsche Panamera feel at the rear. Even though the roofline has a chop top look to it, I had no issues with getting in, out, or headroom space. The 21” wheels kept things in proportion to the size of the Equinox with a design that reminded me of the 80s GMC Syclone. Of course my favorite was seeing the continued use of two-tones with the body being in Riptide Blue and the roof being in Summit White.
Getting inside the Equinox, the 2-tone Evotex seats were comfortable with heated and vented options. With this being equipped with Super Cruise, the top of the steering wheel houses the status lights. I was a little disappointed with the gauge cluster’s cumbersome adjustability. In order to switched between things like tire pressures and trip info, you need to navigate deeply in the infotainment system and then send it to the cluster. The infotainment system was also a disappointment with the lack of Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.
Under the hood, the 85kWh battery is able to be charged with 150kW DC or 11.5kW AC levels. Although it didn’t offer your typical gobs of EV torque, it made for extremely easy driving. The model I drove was the FWD and there is also an optional AWD. I did experience a bit of torque steer on hard acceleration from a stop so make sure you point the tires straight to avoid it pulling to one side.
Overall, I was impressed with the 2025 Chevrolet Equinox EV. Although Chevy did miss the mark on an affordable entry level EV like they had with the Bolt EV, they hit a bullseye on the spirit that made the Bolt such a great fun ride.
