2023 Lexus RZ 450e Review: Lexus Goes Full EV
The 2023 Lexus RZ 450e is Lexus’ first full EV. I’ve been impressed with Lexus’ hybrid offerings, so I was excited to see what taking the full electric plunge would be like.
The exterior of the RZ is unmistakably Lexus, borrowing similar lines to the RX. It does get a more futuristic look you often get with EVs. The biggest change is the iconic Predator-style Lexus grille, gets replaced with a flat panel. It was more susceptible to bugs and debris hitting the painted surface. When it comes to the wheels, this loaner came with the optional 20” wheels. Although you will reduce your driving range per charge, they are the better looking option. If you get a RZ, the Ether color looked incredible but you’ll want to get it with the Onyx Black two-tone option.
Getting inside the RZ, you are greeted with microsuede all over. The door’s were the softest of materials that you won’t be able to stop touching. Seating was also incredibly comfortable and the venting and heating options will make sure you’re at the right temperature. My favorite interior component had to be the steering wheel. I have never experience such a soft leather in any vehicle. When you look up, you have a glass roof that turns opaque if it’s too hot, or transparent if you want to gaze up at the stars.
When it came to performance, the Lexus RZ 450e fell a little short. Don’t expect the typical torque from an EV and to be honest, it made drivability a lot better. Don’t expect it to be a slouch though because you’ll still get a total of 308 horsepower. The power band was also a lot more useable with a surprising boost in mid to high range. With your typical EV, it is usually the opposite. Where I was a little disappointed was the range. With the 18” wheels, you’ll get 220 and 196 with the 20” wheels. Of course that range requires you to be in Range Mode which turns off the AC/heat in the RZ. The ride of the suspension made up for it, offering a relaxing ride on some bad roads.
As far as the 2023 RZ 450e being Lexus’ first full EV, it has many plus and minuses to it. The styling, ride, and drivability make me want the RZ. The range numbers aren’t that impressive considering you have to be in a mode that offers to climate control. I think I would consider sticking with the RX500h, its hybrid sibling, over the full EV RZ 450e.
