2022 Ram 2500 HD Lone Star Review: Heavy Duty Texas Truck
The 2022 Ram 2500 Lone Star showed up and it was definitely Texas sized! The Granite Crystal Metallic color didn’t quite stand out like other available options. The Lone Star Silver Edition did help in the looks department. Adding chrome accents like the mirrors, side steps, and tow hooks, made the Ram 2500 shine. It also added the big 20” polished aluminum wheels, which tied the look together.
The components making this a “heavy duty” truck were beyond its skin. The massive springs help with being able to manage the over 17,000 lbs. of towing capacity. This model was equipped with auto leveling rear suspension should you load it up. There is a downside to that set up and you’ll feel it when you hit smaller consecutive bumps or unpaved roads. It's a small trade-off knowing that you have the better and safer set up for larger hauls.
You get in and this model is equipped with their premium cloth seats. Now this is probably the 12th to 15th Ram truck that I drive and I’m still surprised to see that there are new interiors and designs that I’ve yet to see. What I’m saying is that there’s an interior option for everyone. In the case of this model, I would’ve spent more on getting the leather option. I’ve had cloth in a Limited trimmed 1500 which I fell in love with but this set had me wanting more. The only thing I didn’t want was the static electricity I kept creating when I got out of it. I had to constantly touch the back door before getting out of it. Where this did excel on the inside was the seating position. Not only were the seats and wheel adjustable, the pedals were too. This allowed me to relax knowing my shorter wife can bring them closer to her and not have to be really close to the airbag to reach them.
Under the hood is where it shows the Lone Star Texas size. The massive 6.7L inline-6 Cummins Turbo Diesel engine, filled the entire engine bay. Even though this engine is rated to have 850 lb.-ft. of torque, the power wasn’t really present till later in the RPM range. The V8 gasoline engine that was in the Power Wagon felt more responsive at lower RPM ranges. The 6.7L did feel impressive on highway passing when it already has some momentum going.
At the end of the week with the 2022 Ram 2500 Lone Star, it made me miss the PowerWagon model that I’ve reviewed in the past. Sure it can’t tow as much as the Lone Star, but it did everything else so much better.
