2022 Mazda Miata Review: Next Gen Wish List
I got a chance to review the 2022 Mazda Miata Grand Touring. There wasn’t much change from the 2020 Club model that I reviewed, aside from the addition of Kinematic Posture Control. The Kinematic Posture Control will lightly apply the inner rear brake when you’re turning. This helps minimize body roll which was one of my biggest complaints of the 2020 model that I had reviewed. Thankfully it doesn’t add any additional hardware weight as its simply a software addition to the traction control system.
I figured I’d use my time to reflect on where the Miata has come from my personal 2nd generation model, to the current 4th generation model, and what I’d like to see in the next generation.
Starting with the outside, I’d like to see more differentiation between trims using lower spoilers and side skirts. I think the 17” wheels are the perfect size for the current sized Miata, and hope the next gen model does continue with a lightweight setup.
For the interior, the seats in both the Club and Gran Touring trim were great for their purpose. I did enjoy the headrest speakers that were in the Gran Touring which are used for phone calls. The addition to wireless Apple CarPlay was a nice touch in the Grand Touring. To complete the wireless experience, the Miata does need a wireless charger to help with keeping cable clutter to a minimum.
Under the hood, the biggest talk is what engine will Mazda use for the next generation. They could stay naturally aspirated, turbocharged, or some for of electrification. My hope is if they go with a hybrid powertrain, the battery placement would be added weight but in the right location, can help with creating a great balance to the next Miata.
Overall the current ND Miata is a great chose to go with. I’m excited to see what Mazda will do for the next generation.
