SVRA at COTA 2020
“Drive it like there’s plenty of replacement parts!”
I’d say that’s the motto for racers in the SVRA series. Every year we see these rare classics battle it out on our local F1 track of Circuit of the Americas. The classics at the base trim would be considered rare but these racers are also brining out special trims that were often numbered.
As we arrived, we could already hear and smell all the cars making their way around the track. With many of these cars predating ABS, we could see the cars lock up as they tried to come to a stop before turn 1. This made for some scary moments but showed how the racers were taking it to the limit!
The weekend track time was shared by other racing series. Most notably were the MX5-Miata racing series. It’s always great racing when everyone is using the same car and this series was no exception. Although we only caught the qualifying round for the series, there were a few moments at turn 8 and 9 where they were moments of side by side racing and passing.
The other series that shared the weekend was Trans Am series. We can honestly say these are the loudest cars that we experience at COTA. When we saw they were entering the track, we immediately reached for our ear protection. To add to the auditory excitement, the flames coming out of their side mounted exhausts was exciting to capture.
Having classic race cars, a Formula 1 race track, and some brave racers, is a guaranteed formula for a great weekend. SVRA never disappoints and we can’t wait to see what they’ll bring next year!
