2023 Ram 2500 Rebel Review: Rebel Gone Heavy Duty

The 2023 Ram 2500 Rebel was the truck that many Ram fans were waiting for. When I found it parked in my driveway, it was so large, it barely fit! When I reviewed the Rebel in the 1500 model, I described it as a TRX-Lite trim. In the 2500, I would consider this Rebel the Power Wagon-Lite. There are some more unique things to this that would have you looking at the Rebel over the Power wagon.

Although I always favor brighter colors, the silver looked clean with the black two tone color option. The headlight system did the job to light up the darkest of nights. The fog lights activated when you used the turn signal to make sure you can see where you were going. The mirrors also had lighting systems in the front and backs. They were also fully power adjustable which made lane changing and parking extremely easy. I wished this press vehicle had the 360-degree camera system to make sure every side was accounted for.

The massive 20” steel wheels had aggressive looking Goodyear Wrangler tires. They were surprisingly quiet on the road but still held their own in off-road obstacles. Ram will also a smaller 18” wheel if you’re wanting a more aggressive off-road setup. The iconic light blue and yellow Bilstein shocks can be seen alongside the heavy duty springs. They didn’t offer the smoothest ride but prefer that they perform with heavy loads than offering smooth ride when not loaded.

Getting in meant literally hoping in since this 2500 didn’t have a side step equipped. Once I was in, the Rebel trim treatment was clearly present. The large and comfortable leather seats had the Rebel crest on them. There dashboard also had the Rebel badging with their carbon fiber-like print on the black trim. I was enjoying the big metal Rebel badge that was placed on top of the large arm rest.

The biggest change to the 2023 model year change is the new fully digital gauge cluster. Even though Ram was the last to get rid of the analog needles, I think they’ve done it best. The previous analog and digital was extremely good at showing all the info that you wanted but this took it one step further. Not only do you get multiple small information zones around the display, the center can be changed to have up to 5 different panes with even more information. When you’re towing near the 16,000 lbs that the Ram can do, you’ll want to know what is going on with things like transmission and oil temps.

Under the hood, I had the 6.4L Hemi V8 cranking out 410 horsepower and 429 lb.-ft. of torque. What makes the 2500 Rebel such an attractive option to many customers, is the fact that they can get about 75% of a Power Wagon but with an inline 6-cylinder diesel option. The gas powered option was smooth and sounded incredible when you made the MPGs go down.

Overall, I enjoyed the 2023 Ram 2500 Rebel. Having for the week, I can see how this might be the option many go with over the Power Wagon. My Rebel configuration would include the diesel engine along with a side step and a little brighter exterior color.
