2023 Lexus GX460 Review: Old Dog with Newer Tech
The 2023 Lexus GX460 pulled up to my house and it was virtually identical to the previous 2020 that I had reviewed. The 2023 model was even in the same Atomic Silver as the other one. It’s unfortunate that the GX460 doesn’t have more lively color except for the Nori Green Pearl that’s exclusive to the Black Line Special Edition. The Sport Design Package added front and rear spoilers so be sure to take those into consideration during approach of off-roading obstacles.
Getting in the GX460, the red leather seats make their presence known. It is a shame that if you want the red interior option, you’ll have to settle for white, black, or silvers for exterior colors. Then seats themselves are extremely comfortable with heated and vented options. The adjustability makes it easy to tailor to your preference for those long drives to adventure. The biggest change that this 2023 had compared to the 2020 is the infotainment system. We finally get Apple CarPlay although it is still a wired version. If the cameras haven’t been upgraded, the screen was definitely hindering their quality because they now look incredibly clear as you climb any obstacle.
Under the hood, the 4.6L V8 engine was outputting 301 horsepower through the 6-speed auto, and then to the full-time four wheel drive. Although the power numbers seem low to today’s standards, the low end delivery of it makes it seem like a lot more. From a stop, the GX460 will get moving and keep going in the mid and upper power band. The full-time four wheel drive, along with safety systems, and tires, kept me going in the right direction when I hit a patch of ice on an overpass. The crawl control was also great in assisting me to get up my inclined street that was iced over.
After revisiting the Lexus GX460, I am ready to pull out my check book. I may hold off and see what engine goes into the next generation model since the MPG values can be a little on the low side and I’m liking the wireless Apple CarPlay systems that some of the lower Lexus models have.
