2021 Mazda CX 9 Review: The Suburban Miata
The 2021 Mazda CX-9 is what happens when a car company takes a formula that works on a small scale, adds water, and makes it grow to a full size three row SUV. Now this may seem simple to do but many have failed. Thankfully Mazda was successful getting the spirit of the Miata, and making it present into what many call the mall hauler line of vehicles.
Starting on the outside, many of the design cues have been carried over from the smaller models such as the Mazda 3. The grille has a similar shape as do the headlights. The hood is where we think the proportions were not quite right. It does seem to be a large flat area that lacks any shape to it other than flat. The one thing it doesn’t need is a hood scoop to remedy my criticism.
Under that massive flat hood is the fun part of this SUV. The 2.5L turbo inline 4 in the CX-9 was a very impressive engine when it was paired with the 6-speed auto. This model had the AWD option and made sure to spread the turbo boost love to all the wheels in a very good way. Though we felt some torque steer, it made for a great driver’s experience and not the typical bland experience that’s too common in this size segment of SUVs.
Getting into the Mazda CX-9, you’re greeted by seats wrapped in dark brown Nappa leather and diamond stitching. The 8-way adjustability and high bolsters made them extremely comfortable but still sporty for long spirited drives. Add the heated and vented options and you’ll never want to get out of the CX-9.
The infotainment in the CX-9 was very impressive. The screen’s high resolution made it clear to read small text on it. Adding the 360-degree camera system, and you’ll be able to clearly see anything that may be around. The input device was also impressive working as both a knob to turn, as well as a joystick that you could point towards your desired option.
The rear seat is where the Mazda CX-9 didn’t impress as much as it did elsewhere. The captains seats had a large armrest in the middle that limited the third row access to moving them forward. Once you’re in the third row seats, get ready to have extremely limited legroom. The trunk space is also small when the third row seats are being used.
In the end we loved what Mazda has been able to create with the CX-9. It’s great to see that they’ve been able to pass on that ZOOM-ZOOM Miata fun into their 3-row SUV.
