2021 Land Rover Defender Review: Classic Done Right
Classics are always difficult to redo. It’s guaranteed that you won’t make everyone happy. At least for me, the 2021 Land Rover Defender nailed a lot of the classic’s prestige.
Starting with the outside, you can’t help but to see the roots of the Defender in this newly developed branch. In a world where SUVs lack creative design, this new Defender stood out when parked for curbside pickup. The aggressive browed looking headlights add a personality. The air suspension set to off road setting helps overcome even the largest of obstacles.
Even though the 20-inch wheels are not typical in the off road world, the large side wall tires made for great on road comfort and off roading performance.
Getting under the hood of the Defender, reveals a 3.0L inline 6-cylinder. Land Rover decided not only to turbocharge this engine, but also add an electric supercharger, as well as a mild hybrid system. This allows each power adder to take over where the other would lack power if they stood on their own.
From the multiple materials that make you want to touch them, to the exposed bolts that look like a work of art, the interior of the Defender was a classic retro look done extremely well. Not only does the interior look the part, it also performed the part. The seats were incredibly comfortable for the long road-trips that I took it on. I put the rear seats down to add more cargo space and the rubber grips behind the seats helped create a great non slip surface for my cargo items.
Overall I was extremely impressed with the incredible job that Land Rover did with the Defender. Now the only question is: Do I go 2 door or 4 door?
