Jeep Wrangler EcoDiesel: A Refined Diesel

The 2020 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Shara 4X4 was the second Wrangler that we’ve reviewed. The great thing about a Jeep Wrangler is that there are so many different configurations and options, that it’s easy to build a Jeep for your needs. Enter this Wrangler Unlimited in the Sahara trim.

After reviewing the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon, our first impressions showed that the Rubicon is a little on the rugged side for a daily drive. We didn’t think that this Sahara would change our mind but it did showing a more refined side of the Wrangler name.

Starting off with the exterior, this Wrangler Sahara had the fenders painted in the same Sting-Gray as the body that gave it a more prestigious look. The LED lighting package is not only a stylish option but an extremely functional one. The bright system helps illuminate the well paved roads we’d take the Sahara on. Now don’t worry, this Sahara is still a Jeep and very off-road capable, but we think this trim was better suited for mall crawling rather than rock crawling.

We then enter the Wrangler to be greeted with a lot of leather wrapped surfaces. The first thing that gets your attention is the Sahara stitched on to the seats. From our previous review of the Rubicon, the red anodized dashboard was now wrapped in black leather for this Sahara. It’s a cleaner look to it compared to the red dashboard that didn’t match the yellow color of the Rubicon.

Looking up, I immediately saw something was different in this Wrangler. Gone were the hard plastic roof panels. In place was the pricey but extremely welcomed electric retractable roof which Jeep named the Sky One-Touch Power Top. This was one of the features that really made me consider it as a daily vehicle. With functionality available up to 60 mph, we wouldn’t have to worry about pulling over to take off panels to enjoy the fresh air or to have to put the panels back on because of a sudden rain cloud. Another great thing about the top was that you didn’t have to worry about your cargo area being taken up by large roof panels. This is the option you want to get and even though it’s the just shy of $4,000, find a way to budget better and add it to your monthly payment.

You push the start button and you almost forget what’s under the hood. You just turned on a 3.0L V6 EcoDiesel and have 260 horsepower and a smile inducing 442 lb.-ft of torque! All that is delivered through 8 speeds that shift automatically and do a great job of doing so. It’s an extremely quiet drivetrain which was surprising and why I say that this Wrangler is definitely refined. With it’s 25 combined mpg, it’s also a very practical drivetrain.

I described the Sahara of more of a mall crawler, but it is still a very capable off-road vehicle. It’s still rocks a “Trail Rated” badge which lets you know it can still hang with it’s Rubicon sibling. This Sahara just does it with more creature comforts and does a great job at it. For my everyday use, this Sahara just checks off more boxes to make me consider a Wrangler.
