2023 Mercedes GLS 580 Review: First Class Luxury

The 2023 Mercedes GLS 580 is first class luxury on wheels. Although we loved the GLE, the GLS offered more in every category. Our loaner was in the incredible Emerald Green color which showed as a black color from afar. Get close to the color and you’ll quickly see the rich green sparkle. The 21” split 5-spoke wheels have a classic look with a tall side-walled tire to make the ride smooth. The added air suspension will let you raise the GLS to an off-road capable height, and lower to an easy to get to height.

Getting in, you’re greeted with a very classy white leather interior. Although I’m not a fan of white interior maintenance, the color just seemed right with that green exterior. The seats were comfortable with both heated and cooling options. I was happy to see that the steering wheel buttons haven’t been updated to the newer touch options and instead had the Blackberry style buttons. With this being three rows, there was surprisingly a good amount of space in the third row. The large rear doors made it easy to get to the second or third row of seats. The standard layout is to have a 3 passenger bench as the third row but you’ll want to opt for the more spacious 2 passenger option.

Under the hood, the 4.0L V8 biturbo with mild hybrid drive was delivering 483 horsepower and 516 lb.-ft. of torque. Everything working in harmony gets the GLS moving from 0-60 in just 5.2 seconds. It was impressive to feel power at any part of the power band and it was linear and predictable.

Overall, if you’re wanting a little more from the GLE, you’ll want to go up to the GLS.
