2022 Toyota Supra 3.0 Premium Review: Is that a Supra?

Is that a Supra? It sure is a 2022 Toyota GR Supra 3.0! I finally got a week with one of the most polarizing vehicles of recent times. The reason is due to what’s under the hood isn’t of Japanese origin.

Even though this loaner came in the Nocturnal black color, the design definitely grabbed people’s attention. The side profile and rear are where the design of the Supra excels. The hood design over the wheels, is where I feel like the shape is disproportionally awkward. The other thing that was awkward were the large amount of sealed vents. I feel the design may benefit from having the front bumper, hood, and rear fender openings to be opened or not have plastic covers on them. Although the wheel and tire height looked correct for the Supra, the wheel design did give it a small appearance.

Inside of this Toyota GR Supra were seats wrapped in red leather. The steering wheel also had red colored leather on the sides. It was a small interior which had me doing the super car lay down move to get in. That’s surprising considering I’m about 5’7” tall. If you’re taller than me, I’d suggest going to the dealer and see if you fit. The infotainment system was borrowed from BMW and screen was welcoming to touch usage. The JBL 12-speaker system was one of the bass heavy systems I’ve ever experienced. I had to reduce the bass to its lowest negative value and still felt out of balance.

Under the hood, the 3.0L inline 6-cylinder from BMW, delivered 368 horsepower. Thanks to the twin-scroll single-turbo, the boost was always available and kept the traction control working. The Supra constantly felt like I was driving on ice when I applied full throttle. I experienced this whether I was accelerating from a stop or even at 60 mph. After speaking to multiple Supra owners, this appears to be something that can be corrected with a better alignment. It appears that it’s a common issue among Supras.

After the week was over, I was sad to see the 2022 Toyota GR Supra 3.0 leave. It made for a really fun week.
